Free Speech Movement

This movement was led by Mario Savio and others from the University of California at Berkeley. This movement began when the university decided to restrict students rights to distribute literature and to recruit volunteers for political causes on campus which happened in the fall of 1964. Protesters quickly targeted more general campuses. Berkeley students became dissatisfied with practices at their university. Officials started dividing classes into sections which were taught by graduate students. The Berkeley revolt was one of the first major student protests in the 1960s. It became a model for others.
